About this program

The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland offers grants to support high-quality research and publication relating to Scotland’s past, including excavation (excluding rescue archaeological fieldwork), post‑excavation and scientific analysis, travel to museums/collections/archives, and publication or outreach costs when aligned with the Society’s objectives. Awards average around £2,000, though larger sums may be granted at the Grants & Awards Committee’s discretion, and individual projects are generally supported for no more than three consecutive years except in cases of exceptional impact. Eligible applicants are anyone undertaking research on Scotland’s past, with historical projects incorporating material culture sometimes favoured; applicants must use the Society’s grant application form and email submissions to Dr Helen Spencer (grants@socantscot.org) and should consult the Grant Application Guidelines and full terms and conditions on the Society website. Two annual deadlines apply—30 April and 30 November—with decisions for November submissions communicated by the end of the following January and for April submissions by the end of June.
