About this program
The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, together with The Sophie and Shirley Cohen Memorial Fund, offers the Grants‑In‑Aid Program to fund scientific research on social problem areas related to SPSSI—especially projects unlikely to receive traditional funding; awards are made twice yearly (deadlines May 15 and October 15, 2026). Funding is available up to $1,000 for graduate (pre‑doctoral) research with strong preference for dissertation‑stage students, and up to $2,000 for research by SPSSI members who hold a PhD, with exceptional cases exceeding $2,000. Graduate proposals must include an official university agreement to match the amount requested (this matching requirement will not be waived), and every submission must include documentation of submission to the applicant’s institutional IRB.
