Gustav Neuenschwander Prize

About this program

Awarded biennially by the European Society for the History of Science (ESHS), the Gustav Neuenschwander Prize recognizes outstanding life‑long achievement and major contributions to the history of science; the prize includes €20,000, a medal, the right to deliver a plenary lecture at the ESHS biennial conference, and publication of the lecture in Centaurus. Any scholar in the history of science may be nominated irrespective of nationality, but nominations may only be submitted in writing by ESHS members at least eight months before the conference and must include a report on the candidate’s work, a short CV, and a list of key publications. The winner is selected by a Prize Committee composed of the ESHS Council and past presidents (with a consultative representative from the Charitable Foundation Empiris); any committee member who is nominated must withdraw and selection proceeds by repeated ballots until an absolute majority is reached.
