Harry H. Hess Medal

About this program

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) annually awards the Harry H. Hess Medal to a senior scientist for outstanding research on the constitution and evolution of the Earth and other planets across disciplines such as surface processes, mineral and rock physics, deep Earth studies, tectonophysics, volcanology, geochemistry, petrology, and planetary sciences. Recipients receive an engraved medal, recognition at AGU’s annual meeting, two Honors Reception tickets, and induction into the AGU College of Fellows (subject to the three‑year membership requirement or hardship exceptions); no monetary prize is offered. Nominees must be experienced senior scientists and established leaders in relevant fields; nominations may be peer or self‑submitted, but nominators must be active AGU members and all parties must comply with AGU’s conflict‑of‑interest and professional conduct policies. Selection emphasizes quality, impact, originality, and reach to broad or underrepresented audiences; nomination window is 5 January–2 March and inquiries may be sent to honors@agu.org.
