Harry H. Hess Medal

About this program

The American Geophysical Union annually awards the Harry H. Hess Medal to a senior scientist for outstanding research on the constitution and evolution of the Earth and other planets, recognizing contributions across disciplines such as surface processes, mineral and rock physics, planetary sciences, deep‑Earth studies, tectonophysics, volcanology, geochemistry, and petrology. Recipients receive an engraved medal, recognition at AGU’s annual meeting, two tickets to the Honors Reception, and induction into the AGU College of Fellows (subject to three consecutive years of AGU membership or approved exceptions). Nominations (peer or self) are accepted during 5 January–2 March; nominees must be experienced senior scientists and established leaders, nominators must be active AGU members, and all parties must comply with AGU’s conflict-of-interest and professional conduct policies.
