HHMI Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program

About this program

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program supports outstanding early-career faculty in basic biological and biomedical sciences through up to 10 years of funding, including full salary and benefits, an annual research budget, equipment opportunities, and leadership development. Scholars retain their faculty appointments and laboratories at eligible host institutions while joining the HHMI scientific community and advancing inclusive mentorship and lab leadership. Applicants must hold a PhD, MD, or equivalent; hold or be scheduled to begin by May 1, 2028, a tenured or tenure-track (or equivalent) position at an HHMI-eligible institution; have no more than seven years of independent lab-head experience by December 15, 2026; and be authorized to work in the United States. Applications open November 3 and close December 15, 2026, and require qualifying primary research publications and application materials; recommendation letters are not required.
