IEHS First Book Award

About this program

The Immigration and Ethnic History Society (IEHS) offers its annual First Book Award, including a $2,000 prize presented at the IEHS banquet during the Organization of American Historians meeting, to recognize early-career scholarship in U.S. immigration and ethnic history. Eligible books must be copyrighted in 2026, based on substantial primary research, offer a major new scholarly interpretation, and be the author’s first academic monograph; edited and multi-authored works are excluded. Authors, publishers, Society members, or prize committee members may submit nominations by December 31, 2026, with a hard copy sent to each committee member.
