IMS Lawrence D. Brown Ph.D. Student Award

About this program

The Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) offers the Lawrence D. Brown Ph.D. Student Award to support and showcase outstanding doctoral research in statistics, probability, or machine learning by selecting four students to speak in an invited session at the IMS Annual Meeting. Each award covers travel and meeting registration reimbursement up to $2,000 and winners are announced by October 1 to present at the following year’s meeting. Applicants must be IMS members (student membership may be obtained at time of application), be current Ph.D. students or have received their Ph.D. after May 1 of the application year, and be able to present at the Annual Meeting. Applications (due July 1) require a cover letter with paper title, CV, an unpublished manuscript no longer than 40 pages, and an advisor’s letter attesting to student status, dissertation inclusion, and the applicant’s contribution.
