James B. Macelwane Medal

About this program

Offered annually by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the James B. Macelwane Medal recognizes three to five early-career scientists for outstanding contributions to Earth and space sciences, with emphasis on research depth, impact, creativity, and service, outreach, mentoring, and diversity. Recipients receive an engraved medal, an invitation to present at AGU’s annual meeting, induction into the AGU College of Fellows (subject to membership conditions), and two Honors Reception tickets. Nominees must be within 10 years of their Ph.D. or equivalent; nominators and co-nominators must be active AGU members, and peer or self-nomination is permitted. Nominations (accepted annually from 5 January to 2 March) must document scientific stature, mentoring/outreach and service contributions, include nominators’ comparative assessments, and comply with AGU ethics and conflict-of-interest policies.
