James B. Macelwane Medal

About this program

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) annually awards the James B. Macelwane Medal to three to five early-career scientists for significant contributions to Earth and space sciences; recipients receive an engraved medal, an invitation to present at AGU’s annual meeting, induction into the AGU College of Fellows subject to membership conditions, and two Honors Reception tickets. Nominees are judged on research depth, breadth, impact, creativity, and contributions to service, outreach, mentoring, and diversity rather than solely on quantitative metrics. Eligible nominees must be within 10 years of their Ph.D. or equivalent; nominators and co-nominators must be active AGU members, and peer or self-nomination is permitted; all parties must adhere to AGU ethics and conflict-of-interest policies. Nominations are accepted annually from 5 January to 2 March; inquiries may be sent to honors@agu.org.
