James L. Patton Award

About this program

The American Society of Mammalogists administers the James L. Patton Award, an annual competitive fellowship that grants one $5,000 award to support museum-based research that advances the study of mammalian diversity through direct use of natural history specimens. Award funds may cover travel to collections, related analytical or equipment costs, and fieldwork that enhances collections. Eligible applicants are ASM graduate-student members (MS or PhD) who must propose projects involving direct inspection/use of museum collections, state broader project objectives and the specific collections-use component, and explain how the research contributes to development of natural history collections and associated data (e.g., field collection, curation, digitization). Preference is given to projects that use and develop collections of Recent mammals.
