About this program

Japan Foundation, New York (JFNY) offers Japan–U.S. Global Partnerships Small Grants of up to $10,000 (prepaid; indirect costs supported up to 10% of total direct costs) to U.S.-based 501(c)(3) organizations to create or develop grassroots Japan–U.S. networks (Category A) or to fund Japan–U.S. collaborative projects that address shared global issues with a strong Japan component (Category B). Eligible direct costs include personnel/honoraria, travel/per diem, conference and publication expenses; capital funds, endowment drives, rent, and equipment procurement are not eligible. Concept papers are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted at least three months before project start; projects must begin by March 31, 2026, and invited applicants must submit an online application including a narrative (up to 10 pages), CVs, IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter, a detailed JFNY-budget showing at least 20% non-JFNY cost-share, and required commitment letters from Japan-based partners or collaborators. Projects already funded by other JF programs, proposals longer than three years, Japanese-language education (refer to JF Los Angeles), purely technical/scientific projects, political/religious/commercial activities, and student sightseeing–oriented exchanges are ineligible; review prioritizes innovation, impact, diversity (including underrepresented institutions), capacity, and sustainability.
