Joan Mitchell Fellowship

About this program

Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Joan Mitchell Fellowship annually supports 15 U.S.-based artists working primarily in painting or sculpture with a multi-year program that combines unrestricted financial support, skills development, peer engagement, and convenings. Each fellow receives $60,000 distributed over five years, access to workshops and professional consultations, and fellows in year four and beyond may apply for a residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans. Eligible artists must be nominated by one of the Foundation’s invited nominators, be based in a U.S. state or territory, have a primary practice rooted in painting or sculpture, and not be enrolled in an arts degree program; duos/collectives and prior Painters & Sculptors Grant recipients are ineligible, and finalists are selected by a jury based on artistic vision, impact, and community engagement.
