Joanne Simpson Medal (AGU) — Middle-career award in Earth and space science

About this program

The American Geophysical Union awards the Joanne Simpson Medal annually to two to three middle-career scientists across Earth and space sciences in recognition of transformative scientific advances, strong leadership, and outstanding service to science and society. Recipients receive an engraved medal, induction into the AGU College of Fellows (subject to membership and fellow-status conditions), recognition at AGU’s annual meeting, and two Honors Reception tickets. Nominees must be within 20 years of their terminal degree; nominators/co‑nominators must be active AGU members; peer and self-nominations are permitted and submissions should document scientific excellence, scientific and broader impact, and reputation/leadership while complying with AGU ethics and conflict-of-interest policies. Nominations are accepted during the annual window (5 January–2 March); questions may be directed to honors@agu.org.
