About this program

The American Philosophical Society’s Lewis and Clark Fund supports exploratory field studies involving the collection of specimens and data, with awards typically ranging from several hundred dollars to approximately $5,400 for travel and related field expenses. Projects may address disciplines including archaeology, anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, geology, linguistics, paleontology, and population genetics, but archival or museum-based projects are generally not eligible. Applicants must be doctoral students; master’s students, postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduates are ineligible, and applicants must be U.S. citizens or residents conducting research anywhere, or foreign applicants based at a U.S. institution or conducting research in the United States. Applications are due November 16, 2026, with letters of support due November 13, 2026; required permits and permissions must be secured before funding is released.
