Long-term Visiting Fellowships at the German Historical Institute Washington

The German Historical Institute Washington (GHI) offers 6–12 month long-term visiting fellowships for research in broad thematic areas—German, European & Jewish history; transatlantic and American history; migration and mobility; and histories of empires and their legacies—and welcomes transnational/global and digital-history approaches. Fellowships preferably begin September 2026, require residence in Washington, DC with participation in GHI events, and provide access to regional resources (Library of Congress, National Archives) and U.S. archival travel while expecting projects to employ historical methods and engage relevant historiography. Eligible applicants are ABD doctoral candidates or untenured postdoctoral scholars based at or recently graduated from North American or European institutions, with preference for dissertation or second‑book projects; stipends are €2,400/month for doctoral fellows and €3,400/month for postdoctoral fellows plus a subsidy toward round‑trip travel to Washington, DC.
