Lutheran Quarterly Annual Essay Prize for Young Scholars

About this program

Lutheran Quarterly awards one $5,000 Annual Essay Prize (2024–2033) to nurture young scholars producing journal-length essays in Lutheran history and theology that demonstrate the relevance of the Lutheran Reformation to the contemporary church. Authors should submit 6,000–7,000 word essays compatible with Lutheran Quarterly’s aims; submissions enter the journal’s normal double-blind peer review and finalists are essays published in the journal in a given year. Eligible applicants are dissertation candidates or scholars within five years of earning a PhD, and the editorial staff selects the winner based on biblical, historical, and confessional grounding, originality, writing quality, and contemporary significance. Consideration is rolling with no fixed deadline; if no eligible essay is published in a year the prize is postponed—submit inquiries to Editor Paul Rorem (paul.rorem@ptsem.edu).
