Margery Lowens Dissertation Research Fellowship

About this program

The Society for American Music offers the Margery Lowens Dissertation Research Fellowship to support early-stage Ph.D./DMA dissertation research on music in or of the Americas, funding research costs (travel, books, media, etc.) with awards up to $4,000 and a complimentary year of Society membership; funds must be used for expenses incurred or purchased between July 15, 2025 and September 30, 2026. Applicants must have advanced to doctoral candidacy (or equivalent) between January 1, 2024 and July 1, 2025 and may come from musicology, ethnomusicology, American studies, or related fields. Application materials (single PDF) include a one-page letter with contact information, an up-to-eight-page double-spaced narrative describing the dissertation and proposed research, and a one-page budget; the dissertation adviser must submit a separate letter attesting to the project’s importance, the candidate’s ability to complete it, and the official candidacy date. Recipients must submit a one-page budget and a final report to the Executive Director within one year of the award; smaller requests are accepted and the Society may split the award among multiple fellows.
