Martha Ross Teaching Award (Oral History Association)

About this program

Oral History Association’s Martha Ross Teaching Award recognizes a distinguished primary or secondary school teacher or precollegiate educational outreach professional who has exemplary incorporated oral history into classroom practice; it is awarded biennially in odd-numbered years (next at the OHA 2027 annual meeting) and includes an award plaque, one-year OHA membership, a $500 prize, and complimentary annual meeting registration. Eligible nominees are primary/secondary teachers or precollegiate outreach professionals; nominations may be submitted by the educator or by colleagues, students, administrators, or community members, with only one nominee allowed per submission. Applications are submitted via the OHA form and must include a 2–3 page statement of the teacher’s philosophy and project/curriculum, supporting materials (syllabi, assignments, transcripts, media, publications, etc.), a nominating/supporting letter, and the educator’s CV or resume. Selection emphasizes innovative or successfully implemented oral history philosophies/strategies, use of oral history to enhance learning and serve as a model for education, familiarity with oral history scholarship, adherence to standards for research, interviewing and preservation, and inclusion of a civic or community component.
