Mitchell Prize for Research on British Serials

About this program

The Bibliographical Society of America (BSA) awards three triennial endowed publication prizes recognizing excellence in bibliographical scholarship: the William L. Mitchell Prize for research on British/18th‑century serials (cash award $1,000 + one year’s BSA membership; next awarded January 2027), the Justin G. Schiller Prize for bibliography of historical children’s books (cash award $3,000 + membership; next awarded January 2028), and the St. Louis Mercantile Library Prize for bibliography of American history and literature (cash award $2,000 + membership; next awarded January 2029). Nominees must be active BSA members; eligibility is open to scholars regardless of citizenship, affiliation, degree, or rank, and the awards encourage submissions from early‑career researchers. Eligible works include published books or articles, master’s theses or doctoral dissertations approved/defended, or web‑based research, provided the work was published or approved in the award year or within the three preceding calendar years and falls within each prize’s topical and chronological scope. Applicants may self‑nominate or be nominated by others and must submit required materials (letter of intent, CV, proof of publication/approval, and for web entries free access and archiving plans) during the BSA’s announced submission windows.
