About this program

The New Zealand Marine Sciences Society (Te Hunga Mātai Moana O Aotearoa) offers the NZMSS Student Research Grant to assist postgraduate researchers in extending marine science projects beyond typical academic funding and to increase national and international exposure of graduate research. Grants are awarded as funds allow (no fixed amount specified) and may be used for any purpose that supports the applicant’s research. Applicants must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree at a New Zealand institution and be current NZMSS members; applications require two emailed documents—a blinded scientific proposal (maximum three single‑spaced pages, excluding references) and a one‑page applicant details sheet with contact and supervisor information—submitted in .doc or .pdf format to secretary@nzmss.org. Awardees must present at an NZMSS annual conference (registration fee waived), submit a two‑page summary suitable for a press release within one year of completion, acknowledge NZMSS support and provide a signed statement on fund use; proposals are independently reviewed by at least three referees and any use of animals must address ethics and relevant permits under the Animal Welfare Act (1999).
