About this program
PEN America offers two PEN/Jean Stein Grants for Literary Oral History annually, each providing a $15,000 cash award to support completion of a literary nonfiction project that uses oral history to illuminate an event, individual, place, or movement. The grant honors the legacy of author and editor Jean Stein and is intended for final book development. Applicants must be individuals submitting a single, unpublished work in progress written in English, with oral history as a significant component; scholarly or academic writing is ineligible. Projects may not be published before April 15, 2027, and applications must include project statements, a CV, outline, interview transcripts, and a 20–40-page writing sample submitted as one PDF through Submittable.
