About this program

The Society for Applied Anthropology (SfAA) annually awards the Peter K. New Student Research Competition to recognize outstanding single‑authored student research in the applied social and behavioral sciences, with emphasis on work relevant to health care or human services; prizes include $3,000 and a trophy for first place (plus travel stipend and lodging), with smaller cash and travel awards for second and third place. Applicants must have been enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student during the calendar year prior to the award (doctoral degree holders ineligible), and prior first‑ or second‑place winners may not reapply. Manuscripts must be original, unpublished field research, anonymized, single‑authored, 12‑pt font, double‑spaced, and no more than 45 pages inclusive of notes and appendices; unaltered undergraduate papers or theses are not acceptable. Submissions are made online (doc, docx, pdf) by November 30, winners are notified by the end of January, and the first‑place recipient must present at the SfAA Annual Meeting and submit the paper to Human Organization for possible publication.
