Phillips Fund for Native American Research

About this program

The American Philosophical Society’s Phillips Fund provides one-year research grants of up to $3,500, with awards averaging approximately $3,000, for work in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of studies of Native Americans in the continental United States and Canada. Funds may support travel, audio/video recording, and consultant fees, but not archaeology, contemporary ethnography, psycholinguistics, permanent equipment, or pedagogical materials. Younger scholars with doctorates are preferred, and graduate students may apply for master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation research; applicants working with Indigenous communities must describe consultation, research approvals, and ethical-access arrangements. Applications, including two letters of support, are due March 1, 2027, and award recipients must submit a report and arrange appropriate archival deposits of research materials.
