About this program

The Pulitzer Center is offering grants for data-driven journalism projects that illuminate underreported issues, encouraging advanced methods (ML, NLP, spatial/satellite analysis, drones, sensors), original data collection/analysis, strong visuals, cross‑newsroom or international collaboration, and a clear distribution plan aimed at shaping public discourse and holding power to account. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with no fixed budget range (most past awards $10,000–$20,000) and multiple projects may be funded each year. Eligible applicants include U.S. and international newsrooms, staff and freelance journalists, and collaborative teams (one submission per journalist/team/newsroom); required materials are a 250‑word project description and distribution plan, methodology and fact‑checking/data verification plan, preliminary budget (travel, software, satellite/GIS, hardware; do not include stipends for employed journalists), three published work samples (links), three professional references, and a CV; letters of support are encouraged and certain expenses (books, feature films, staff salaries, most equipment purchases) are ineligible.
