RCGS Independent Research Grants

About this program

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) offers annual Independent Research Grants of up to $5,000 to support independent research projects on Canadian geographical topics that advance the Society’s mandate to promote knowledge of Canada. Applications are reviewed once a year (deadline February 14) with decisions typically announced 4–6 weeks after the deadline; the Society will fund project expenses within Canada but does not support travel outside Canada, salaries or honoraria, professional fees, or capital equipment costing more than $5,000. Eligible applicants are independent researchers resident in Canada (citizen or permanent resident) who are not students or employees of post‑secondary institutions, and projects must be undertaken in Canada and address elements of Canada’s geography. Required materials include a project title and description, applicant information and CV, a two‑page project outline (objectives, significance, methodology, schedule with start/end dates), a knowledge mobilization plan, permits/approvals information, a detailed budget with justification, and referees/letters of reference.
