Research and Travel Grants

About this program

The Society of Antiquaries of London offers Research and Travel Grants to support competitive projects investigating the material past (material culture and remains), encouraging archaeological synthesis and interdisciplinary approaches with measurable outcomes. Awards typically range from £500–£5,000, with named sub-awards available (e.g., Janet Arnold £350–£5,000; Beatrice de Cardi up to £15,000; Margaret and Tom Jones up to £10,500; Wheeler and Lambarde travel awards up to £500), and are usually annual with possible renewal for up to two further years (maximum three years). Applications must be submitted by the project director/PI (early career researchers welcome; specific travel awards target undergraduates and first‑year postgraduates); eligible costs include travel and subsistence, commissioned specialist/technical services, site accommodation, materials/consumables and hire of specialist equipment not reasonably available to the applicant. Degree-related research, retrospective applications, conference travel, staff salaries, institutional overheads, publication subventions and contingency are not funded; applicants must obtain all permissions before release of funds and must submit a report, financial statement and images after completion.
