About this program

The Design History Society offers an annual Research Publication Grant (total fund £3,000, individual awards up to £1,000) to support publication-related costs for research-based outputs (peer‑reviewed articles or books from academic presses/museums), awarded by a blind DHS Executive Committee panel. Applicants must be DHS members (individuals or collaborative teams worldwide; one application per person per year) and may claim eligible costs such as reproduction and permission clearance for copyrighted images and payments to third parties for proofreading/indexing, but not retrospective costs, author/editor fees, online‑only or non‑English publications, Open Access APCs, teaching cover, or publisher subvention fees. Applications must be anonymised and include a detailed, evidenced budget with quotations (for image‑heavy submissions a numbered list of confirmed illustrations and costs) and written evidence that the publication is scheduled within 18 months; recipients must acknowledge DHS and provide a 500–800 word project report with a copyright‑free image within six months.
