RGS-IBG Postgraduate Research Awards

About this program

The Royal Geographical Society (with Institute of British Geographers) offers RGS‑IBG Postgraduate Research Awards of up to £2,500 to individual PhD students to support fieldwork and data collection that advance geographical knowledge, with several named awards available (Albert Reckitt, Walters Kundert, Geographical Club, Hong Kong Research and Dudley Stamp Memorial Awards). Funding is intended for primary fieldwork and cannot support work already completed; fieldwork should generally not begin before 1 April 2026. Applicants must be registered PhD students at a UK higher education institution, with preference given to those who do not receive full fieldwork funding from research councils, universities or comparable sources. Applications and enquiries are submitted by email to grants@rgs.org; successful applicants will be notified by mid‑March 2026 following external review, and applicants should consult the Society’s grants guidance before applying.
