Robert H. Ferrell Book Prize

About this program

The Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) awards the annual Robert H. Ferrell Book Prize and $1,000 for distinguished scholarship in the broadly defined history of American foreign relations. Eligible works include books beyond the author’s first monograph, including biographies of statesmen and diplomats; general surveys, autobiographies, and editions of essays or documents are excluded. Authors must be SHAFR members, and books nominated for the 2027 prize must have been published in 2026. Nominations may be submitted by the author, publisher, or any SHAFR member and require a formal nomination letter and three physical copies, which must arrive by February 1, 2027.
