About this program
AVS (American Vacuum Society), supported by Agilent Technologies, administers the Russell & Sigurd Varian Award to recognize and encourage excellence in graduate studies and research in vacuum science and related technologies. Eligible applicants are registered graduate students at accredited institutions (normally not graduating before award selection) and may receive the award only once; selection emphasizes research excellence and academic record. After an Awards Committee preselection in spring/summer, the top ten nominees give virtual presentations and interviews in late summer from which eight awardees are chosen and one top student receives the Varian Award; recipients receive a cash award, a certificate, and reimbursed travel to the AVS International Symposium (amounts unspecified).
