About this program

Smith Richardson Foundation’s International Security and Foreign Policy and Domestic Public Policy programs fund research and writing that advance knowledge on the Foundation’s identified public‑policy priority areas. Applicants must begin with a concept paper (one‑page data sheet plus up to a five‑ to six‑page narrative) describing the issue, PI bios, research strategy, expected products, timeline, and a detailed budget; staff will invite a full proposal if the concept paper merits further consideration. Grant requests over $50,000 and multi‑year awards are considered at regular board meetings, while requests of $50,000 or less are reviewed on an ongoing basis; the Foundation will acknowledge receipt but cannot guarantee a fixed response timeline. Eligible applicants are researchers or organizations conducting policy research; the Foundation generally does not fund internal evaluations of direct‑service organizations or educational/support grants to individuals.
