Smith-Wintemberg Award

About this program

The Canadian Archaeological Association (CAA) administers the Smith-Wintemberg Award to recognize professional members who have made outstanding contributions to advancing archaeology and knowledge of Canada’s archaeological past, honoring the legacies of Harlan I. Smith and William J. Wintemberg. Eligible nominees are professional Canadian archaeologists (including Canadians working primarily abroad, though priority is given to those whose careers have focused on Canadian archaeology) who have substantially advanced training and practice, produced exceptional research or methodological/theoretical contributions, disseminated archaeological knowledge in professional or public spheres, been active at local/regional/national/international levels, and worked with Indigenous, Black/racialized, or other cultural minority communities in a Canadian context. Nominations must be submitted using the CAA award nomination form and include a recent CV, a nominator’s letter of introduction, a minimum of two letters of support and any optional supporting materials; incomplete packages will not be considered and the award is presented, as merited, at the CAA Annual Meeting.
