SNAME Graduate Scholarships

About this program

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) offers up to 13 named graduate scholarships providing up to $21,000 for one year to support master’s-level study and research in naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, and related fields. Several named awards have specific foci (e.g., Thordon Bearings for environmentally beneficial innovations, Donald L. Blount for high‑speed craft hydrodynamics, Alan C. McClure restricted to naval/marine/ocean engineering), while others support broader discipline-based study. Applicants must be enrolled (or intend to enroll) in a master’s program for the upcoming fall and hold SNAME membership at least four months before the application deadline (McClure requires two years); applicants may receive a graduate scholarship only once and those who already hold an engineering master’s are generally limited to the Maclean or Blount scholarships. Applications are due 1 February (supporting documents by 15 February), GRE scores are optional but can account for up to 15% of the ranking, selections are made in April, and funds may be used for tuition, textbooks, fees, or research-related expenses.
