SSRC-JF Next Generation Japan Studies Development Program

About this program

The Social Science Research Council and the Japan Foundation jointly fund the SSRC-JF Next Generation Japan Studies Development Program to expand undergraduate and graduate-level engagement with Japan through immersive study tours, early-career hires, and visiting faculty exchanges. The program offers institutional Study Tour Grants (up to $32,500) to support five-or-more students on curriculum-based Japan trips (minimum five days), Next Gen Postdoctoral Fellowships (up to $60,000) as partial support for hiring recent PhDs specializing in Japan in the social sciences or humanities, and Visiting Professorship Grants (up to $20,000) to host Japan-based faculty for stays of up to six weeks. Eligible applicants are U.S.-based colleges, universities, or consortia; study tours must meet the minimum student and activity requirements, postdoctoral hires must be recent PhD holders with Japan specialization, and visiting professors must be hosted by a U.S. institution or consortium.
