STS Looking to the Future Scholarship Program

About this program

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) offers the Looking to the Future Scholarship, a mentorship and workforce-development award that supports medical students and general surgery residents pursuing cardiothoracic surgery by funding attendance at the STS Annual Meeting (complimentary registration, four-night STS hotel stay, exclusive events, Credly badge, and up to $700 travel reimbursement). Eligible applicants are medical students (US/Canada, preference MS1–MS2), clinical general surgery residents (PGY1–PGY3, preference PGY1–PGY2), and residents on dedicated research time who have not begun PGY4, with one scholar per institution and priority given to those who have not previously attended a national CT meeting or received specified CT surgery scholarships. Applications (mid‑August 2026–September 25, 2026) require a CV, a signed letter of commitment from the dean (students) or program director (residents), an institutional letter of recommendation, and a 250‑word essay describing your interest, mentoring/exposure, and the opportunities the scholarship would provide.
