The Katharine Briggs Award (annual book prize for folklore studies)

The Folklore Society awards the annual Katharine Briggs Award to recognize outstanding books in folklore and related cultural, literary, anthropological, linguistic, sociological or geographical studies first published in Britain and Ireland. Eligible books are in English (normally not translations) and must be first, original publications in the UK or Republic of Ireland between 1 June and the following 31 May; exclusions include reprints, children’s retellings, simple tale collections without scholarly apparatus, and normally pamphlets/booklets, and works published by The Folklore Society or by members of its Council. Publishers or authors may submit unsolicited entries after the convenor’s March call; four copies must reach the Society’s office by 31 May (for late-May publications the entry form must be filed by 31 May and copies may arrive by 30 June), submissions are not returned, and signed-for delivery is recommended. A three-judge panel appointed by the Society’s Council selects the winner, who receives an engraved goblet and £300; judges may withhold the award and their decision is final.
