The Stuart L. Bernath Book Prize

About this program

The Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) awards the annual Stuart L. Bernath Book Prize and $2,500 to recognize distinguished scholarship in American foreign relations. The 2027 prize honors a first book published in 2026 that demonstrates exceptional research, interpretation, analysis, organization, and writing. Eligible authors must be SHAFR members, and the work must be a history of international relations; biographies of statesmen and diplomats qualify, while edited volumes, general surveys, autobiographies, and nonhistorical social science works do not. Nominations may be submitted by the author, publisher, or any SHAFR member and must include a nomination letter and three physical copies or page proofs, received by February 1, 2027.
