About this program
The Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR) awards the annual $1,000 Stuart L. Bernath Scholarly Article Prize for distinguished research and writing on any topic in U.S. foreign relations. Articles published in 2026 will be considered for the 2027 prize, with nominations due by February 1, 2027. Eligible authors must be graduate students or within ten years of receiving the Ph.D., and the article must be among their first six publications; previous winners of specified SHAFR book awards are ineligible. Nominations require an electronic article copy, concise CV, and formal nomination letter; articles in Diplomatic History are automatically considered.
