Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism – Features

About this program

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) awards the annual Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism — Features to an individual journalist or a team (up to four contributors) for a feature story or series (excluding books) that makes Earth and space sciences accessible to non‑scientists; recipients receive a $5,000 prize, an engraved award, recognition in Eos and at AGU’s annual meeting, up to $1,000 travel reimbursement, and two Honors Banquet tickets. Eligible applicants are journalists working in print, electronic, broadcast or cable outlets or freelance; self‑nominations are permitted, AGU membership is not required, and only one entry per nominee is allowed per year. Eligible works must cover scientific disciplines represented by AGU and be feature writing prepared with a deadline longer than one week; nominees and collaborators must comply with AGU ethics and conflict‑of‑interest policies, and past Sullivan winners within the last two years are ineligible.
