Women's and Independent Folklorists' Sections' Annual Meeting Award

The American Folklore Society’s Women’s Section and Independent Folklorists’ Section offer a $1,250 Annual Meeting Award to help an independent folklorist working on women’s issues attend and present at the AFS Annual Meeting; funds may cover transportation, registration, lodging, and per diem and are contingent on proposal acceptance. Applicants must live at least 100 miles from the meeting site, derive a significant portion of income from independent consulting or independent scholarship, plan to attend at least two full days plus the Sections’ business meetings, and not have previously presented the same paper at an AFS meeting. Apply via the AFS portal with a letter of application (up to three pages) addressing participation plans, independent work and interest in women’s folklore, income proportion, impact and a budget estimate, plus a résumé/CV; recipients must be willing to serve on the selection committee the following year and may not have received certain travel awards in the past two years. Deadline: June 15; selections are made based on scholarly quality, benefit to the applicant and the field (especially women’s folklore), and demonstrated need/feasibility.
