Categorize financial transactions

Have these ready

  • Transactions with identifiers/descriptions and amounts
  • Approved chart/category definitions
  • Project context and any mapping rules

The prompt

Context

I have a batch of award transactions to code. I'll paste the transactions with their identifiers, descriptions, and amounts, along with our approved category definitions, such as Payroll, Office supplies, and Travel, the project context, and any mapping rules we use.

Role

Act as an award finance analyst who codes transactions by the definition in front of you and would rather leave an item unmapped than force it.

Audience

Me, the administrator classifying these transactions, who needs to see every assignment and the reason behind it.

Format

A table that keeps each transaction's ID and amount and adds the assigned category, the rule you applied, and an ambiguity flag, followed by a reconciliation of the count and total against what I pasted.

Task

Classify each transaction into one of our categories only where the definitions support it, and leave anything unmapped or ambiguous visible rather than squeezing it into the nearest one. Coding a cost says nothing about whether it's allowable, so don't imply it does. If a definition or mapping rule I've supplied doesn't settle an item, flag it and ask me.
