AFS Graduate Fieldwork Grant

About this program

The American Folklore Society offers Graduate Fieldwork Grants of $4,000 or $8,000 to support graduate student field research contributing to a folklore thesis or dissertation, with awards selected for intellectual excellence, feasibility, and career potential. Applications are due May 1 and must include a research proposal, personal statement, budget and schedule, CV, transcript, and recommendation from an AFS-active committee member. Applicants must be AFS members enrolled full time and in good standing in a folklore or related PhD program, or in a terminal MA program with plans for doctoral study; citizenship and research topic are unrestricted. Awardees must obtain IRB approval, submit a post-fieldwork report and public outreach piece, and participate in an AFS proposal-writing workshop.
