About this program

Alaska Sea Grant at the University of Alaska Fairbanks runs an 8-month AKSEA cohort that pairs Traditional Knowledge Holders, local and academic experts, and teachers to co-create place-based, marine-focused 2–5 day classroom mini-units centered on anchoring phenomena, with priority for Prince William Sound and the Northern Gulf Coast. Participants attend a three-day in-person kickoff (Sept 12–14, 2026 in Anchorage; travel provided), meet monthly via virtual sessions (Oct–Apr), and deliver a unit plan of stand-alone lessons and one lesson/activity for a May final presentation. Teams of four are required (two teachers—one currently teaching science—one local/Traditional Knowledge Holder or expert, and one academic expert such as a graduate student, postdoc, or research scientist); no prior lesson-planning experience is necessary and statewide applicants are welcome. Experts receive $1,400 and teachers $2,000 compensation, travel is covered, and applications are reviewed beginning April 1 and accepted until filled (currently seeking Traditional Knowledge Holders); contact Leigh Lubin with questions.
