About this program

amfAR’s Target Grants provide up to $480,000 total costs (performance period July 1, 2026–June 30, 2028; up to 20% indirect costs) to fund pre-clinical or clinical biomedical research aimed at achieving sustained HIV remission or viral eradication, with priority for pragmatic, scalable approaches deployable globally. Projects must evaluate interventions in vivo (people living with HIV, non-human primates, or humanized mice) or ex vivo (cells from PLWH or infected animals); studies confined to cell lines, primary cells from HIV-negative donors, or purely descriptive reservoir analyses without actionable interventions are not responsive unless they yield critical insights that accelerate cure strategies. Applicants must hold a research or clinical doctoral degree and be affiliated with a nonprofit research institution (domestic or international), and must clearly describe the intervention, its current development stage, and steps needed to progress to clinical testing. The synopsis stage is closed; selected applicants will be invited to submit full applications (invitation tentative March 17) with a full-application deadline of April 30, 3:00 p.m. EDT.
