Artistic Research Fellowships

About this program

The Folger Institute offers Artistic Research Fellowships for artists conducting primary research on the early modern world (ca. 1400–1800) and its legacies, providing 1–3 month onsite, virtual, or hybrid residencies between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027 with awards of $5,000 per onsite month and $4,000 per virtual month. Fellows receive access to the Folger’s collections and digital resources, researcher consultations, networking opportunities, public exposure, and J‑1 visa sponsorship if needed. Applicants need not hold a formal degree but should document training and experience in a CV and must submit a 250‑word abstract, a 1,500‑word project description specifying duration and modality, a two‑page CV, a one‑page list of Folger sources, and a letter of recommendation (recommended but not strictly disqualifying if omitted); optional portfolio materials may be included. Applications open October 15 and are due January 15 by 11:59 pm ET; residential fellows must arrange any needed studio space and follow current COVID/travel guidance.
