About this program

The Association for Slavic, East European, & Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) offers Dissertation Research Grants—including several named topical and regional awards—providing stipends up to $6,000 to support doctoral dissertation field research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia across disciplines relevant to Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies. Grants fund research-related expenses incurred outside the United States (payments are made to U.S. banks) and do not cover tuition or fees to the applicant’s U.S. institution. Eligible applicants are enrolled in a U.S. PhD program (the James Bailey grant is also open to Canadian PhD students), must have ABD status by the start of proposed travel, demonstrate requisite language skills, be ASEEES student members, and plan research in one or more eligible countries with travel beginning by January 31 of the year following notification. Applicants may not have previously received an ASEEES Dissertation Research Grant or certain fully funded fellowships for the same project (partial concurrent funding is permitted); applications are submitted online and require a project description, CV/transcripts, and two professional reference letters, one from the dissertation advisor.
