About this program

ASPCA’s Open‑Access Publishing Fund subsidizes article processing charges for open‑access, peer‑reviewed animal welfare research articles, covering up to $5,000 USD per article with funds paid directly to the publisher (no reimbursements). Applications are reviewed by a panel on a rolling basis and funded manuscripts must be submitted within six months of approval; applicants must not have already paid publisher fees. Eligible applicants are U.S. or Canadian citizens or residents, including independent researchers, those affiliated with academic/research/animal welfare/human service organizations or government agencies, and students on mentored projects (one award per applicant as primary author per calendar year). Eligible journals must provide immediate unfettered open access; applications require a 500‑word justification, journal name/rationale, author names/affiliations, lead author CV, disclosure of prior funding, APC amount requested, and a substantially complete draft manuscript, and all awards will be publicly disclosed and must be acknowledged in the published paper.
