Benjamin Franklin Medals - Nominations

About this program

The Franklin Institute invites nominations for the Benjamin Franklin Medals—presented in seven disciplines (Chemistry; Civil and Mechanical Engineering; Computer and Cognitive Science; Earth and Environmental Science; Electrical Engineering; Life Science; Physics) and for interdisciplinary work—each medalee receives a 14‑karat gold medal and a $10,000 honorarium. Eligible nominees are living individuals of any nationality whose inventions, discoveries, technological developments, or bodies of work have demonstrated significant scientific value, proven utility, or direction for future research; medalists must participate in Awards Week events in Philadelphia and the nomination-to-award investigation typically requires a minimum of two years. Nominations may be submitted year‑round by any individual or organization (self-nominations accepted), may include up to three co-nominees, and must be supplied in English with the medal name, nominee and nominator contact information, CV and bibliography, a proposed citation (≤50 words), a comprehensive narrative, and contact details for at least five references; submit by mail or email to awards@fi.edu.
