Career Development Awards (Breakthrough T1D)

About this program

Breakthrough T1D’s Career Development Awards fund early-career faculty to establish independent research programs addressing Breakthrough T1D mission priorities, and now explicitly permit human-subject research on long-term T1D complications (diabetic eye, kidney, cardiovascular) including interventional/observational studies and clinical biosample/data analyses. Awards provide up to USD 200,000 per year (including up to 10% indirect costs) for a project of up to five years, require annual progress reports, and expect awardees to devote at least 75% effort to T1D research. Eligible applicants hold an MD, DMD, DVM, DO, PsyD, PhD or equivalent and must be in an early stage of an independent faculty career (first faculty appointment generally within 3 years of submission, with flexibility for documented career interruptions) at an eligible institution. Applications (research plan up to 12 pages plus a 2-page career statement) are submitted via RMS360 and must include three confidential recommendation letters and a departmental commitment/assurance; human-subject projects must comply with the Grant Handbook guidance.
